What is Remembrance Sunday?

On Remembrance Sunday, the second Sunday in November, the UK remembers the members of the armed forces who died in the two World Wars and in later conflicts. It falls on the Sunday closest to 11 November, Armistice Day, when the fighting of the First World War ended.

In 2026 it falls on Sunday 8 November.

The ceremony at the Cenotaph

The national service takes place at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London. At 11 o'clock a two-minute silence is held, marked by the firing of a gun, followed by the Last Post. The King, political leaders and representatives of the armed forces and the Commonwealth lay wreaths, and thousands of veterans march past.

Similar services take place at war memorials in towns and villages across the UK, often followed by a parade.

The poppy

In the weeks before, many people wear a red paper poppy, sold by the Royal British Legion to support current and former members of the armed forces and their families. The poppy became a symbol of remembrance because the flowers grew on the battlefields of Flanders, as described in the poem 'In Flanders Fields'.

Remembrance Sunday is not a bank holiday, but as it falls on a Sunday most people can attend a service. A few days earlier or later comes Remembrance Day itself, on 11 November.
