What is Easter Monday?

Easter Monday is the day after Easter Sunday. In many Christian countries it has long been a second day of celebration, and in a large part of Europe it is a public holiday. Its date moves with Easter and always falls between late March and late April.

In the church calendar, Easter is not a single day but a whole season of fifty days, running until Pentecost. Easter Monday is the first day of Easter week, which is why many countries traditionally kept it as a day of rest and visiting family.

In 2027 it falls on Monday 29 March.

Easter Monday in the UK

Easter Monday is a bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It became a bank holiday with the Bank Holidays Act of the Victorian era, the law that introduced bank holidays in the first place. In Scotland it is not a bank holiday, although some Scottish councils and employers give a local spring holiday around Easter.

Because it always falls on a Monday, there's never a substitute day. Together with Good Friday it creates a four-day weekend. Many families use it for a day out, and traditions such as egg rolling, where decorated eggs are rolled down a hill, still take place in some parts of the country.
