The coronation of King Charles III

This one-off bank holiday celebrated the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The coronation took place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6 May, and the extra bank holiday followed on Monday 8 May. Coming just a week after the early May bank holiday, it gave people across the UK a second long weekend in a row.

It was the first coronation in the UK for seventy years, since that of Queen Elizabeth II.

How the coronation was celebrated

The Saturday saw the coronation service and a procession through London. On the Sunday, communities held Coronation Big Lunches and street parties, and a concert took place at Windsor Castle. The Monday bank holiday was dedicated to the Big Help Out, encouraging people to volunteer in their local area.

A one-off bank holiday

The bank holiday was created by royal proclamation under the Banking and Financial Dealings Act and applied throughout the UK. It does not return in later years and is listed on this site for reference. As with any bank holiday, whether you had the day off depended on your employment contract.
