Mothering Sunday

In the UK, Mother's Day is Mothering Sunday: the fourth Sunday of Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday. That's why it moves every year and falls in March or early April, unlike in the United States and many other countries, where Mother's Day is in May.

In 2027 it falls on Sunday 7 March.

The day has religious roots. On this Sunday, people traditionally returned to their 'mother church', the main church or cathedral of their area. Later it became a day when young people in domestic service were given time off to visit their mothers, often bringing flowers picked along the way.

How Mothering Sunday is celebrated

Today mothers are treated to cards, flowers, breakfast in bed or a Sunday lunch out, and restaurants are often busy. The traditional bake is Simnel cake, a fruit cake with a layer of marzipan, although it is now more often eaten at Easter. Mothering Sunday is not a bank holiday, but as it always falls on a Sunday most people are free anyway.

Because the British date and the American date are different, international online shops sometimes advertise Mother's Day in May.
