What is Epiphany?
Epiphany, on the 6th of January, marks the visit of the Magi, the wise men from the East who, according to the Gospel of Matthew, followed a star to Bethlehem with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. It is the end of the twelve days of Christmas. In Eastern churches, the day also commemorates the baptism of Jesus.
In some countries Epiphany is a public holiday, such as in Spain, Italy, Austria and parts of Germany, and in Spain and Latin America it is the main day for giving presents to children.
The date never changes; only the day of the week does.
In 2027 it falls on Wednesday 6 January.
Epiphany and Twelfth Night in the UK
Epiphany is not a bank holiday in the UK. It is best known for its link with Twelfth Night, the evening of 5 January or 6 January depending on how you count, when traditionally the Christmas decorations come down. Leaving them up any longer is said to bring bad luck.
Twelfth Night was once a lively celebration with a special Twelfth Cake, and Shakespeare's comedy of that name may have been written for performance at that time of year. In churches, the story of the wise men is read and many nativity scenes get their three kings only now.
